  Mayor Karachi chair meeting on Karachi Neighborhood Improvement Project.  
  Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar presided over a meeting in his office on Wednesday in connection with the Karachi Neighborhood Improvement Project(KNIP) in which the Director General Urban Policy & Strategic Planning and Project Director KNIP Khalid Mehmood Shaikh gave a detailed briefing and presentation on the project costing US $ 98million which would complete in 4 years. Chairman Works Committee Hassan Naqvi, Chairamn Finance Committee Nadeem Hidayat, Chairman MUCT Rahat Hussain Siddiqui, Advisor to Mayor Farhat Khan, Director General Technical Services Shahab Anwer, Urban Specialist KNIP P&D Department Tariq Ahmed Rind and Senior Engineer KNIP Naveed Izhar, Director Technical S.M. Shukaib, Officers of Engineering, Finance and other concerned departments were also present on this occasion. Mayor Karachi said implementation of KNIP in Karachi would provide better civic facilities to citizens and also improve the revenue recovery and financial management system in KMC. He called this a good step by the World Bank and assured all possible cooperation and support in this project which is aimed at enhancing public spaces in targeted neighborhoods and improvement of urban road infrastructure to enhance mobility inclusion and access to market and city’s capacity to provide selected administrative services. Earlier the project director KNIP while giving presentation said the Project includes the Integrated Financial Management System (IFMIS) for KMC (US $ 4.5 Mn), Redevelopment of Saddar Downtown Area (US$42 Mn.), Malir Area Road and Public Spaces Enhancements (US$8 Mn), Korangi Neighborhood Mobility Improvements (US$20 Mn.) ,Support KMC in improving its municipal utility tax revenues by financing a survey in South and Central Districts to assess the potential tax base (Us $ 2.5 Mn.) and Parking Management Study for Saddar Downtown (US $ 0.2Mn) He said upcoming World Bank project for Karachi integrated urban management would be based on potential of urban property tax devolution to local governments. World Bank is now moving forward with preparing a new project which will have these aspects like Development funding to KMC, Performance grants to 6 DMCs, Capacity building & technical assistance to KMC & DMCs and Support to improving Urban Property Tax system (revenue collection, tax base, rates, tax administration, etc.) Mayor Karachi directed the officers of finance, engineering and MUCT departments to keep close coordination with the team of KNIP and ensure speedy implementation of projects so that citizens could be provided with better civic facilities and performance of KMC could improve further.
